ENTHUSIASM IN LEADERSHIP

Every human being has some level of enthusiasm, but the cause of this may vary from person to person. I would not be defining enthusiasm here, but by the time you are done listening through, you would have had a good understanding of what enthusiasm is just enough to apply it to yourself and put up an explanation whenever the need arises.

According to Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm”. If nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm, then nothing great will ever be achieved without it, even in leadership. For one to be an effective leader there has to be a good dose of enthusiasm operating in such a person. It is one of the things that endear the heart of a leader to the people being led, the area of assignment.
A leader who is not enthusiastic about what S/He is involved in will not achieve anything significant in his/her leading role. Enthusiasm spurs passion, and passion rolls with excellence. A leader that is not passionate about what S/He is doing is wasting time on both sides; his/her own side, and the side of the people being led.

The leader at all times must be enthusiastic and passionate about what S/he is doing; about the people and the tasks ahead. This spurs a similar level of enthusiasm in the followers and others in the constituency of the leader because enthusiasm is very contagious. It may take a while depending on the mindset and attitude of the people involved, but in the long run there will be some enthusiasm assimilated by the members of the constituency.
Without enthusiasm, no matter how greatly constructed or designed a plan or vision is, enthusiasm, plays a great role in the start off of the plan, in the continuous execution of the plan and concluding/completing of the plan. Every person not just those in visible leadership positions but everyone with a task, assignment or job to be done must be enthusiastic about it if such a person wants to go above and beyond the average or regular level.

Many people who have excelled in various tasks, assignments, or who have invented or discovered great things can partly attribute their success to the passion, desire, eagerness, zeal and whole-hearted effort to accomplishing such great feats. Enthusiasm and laziness cannot work together, neither can enthusiasm and discouragement fly in the same plane.

We must understand and not just know that “Nothing great will ever be achieved without enthusiasm”, so also no great hurdle can be scaled without enthusiasm. No leader can excel without enthusiasm.
